Electronics
The electronics sector is a key industry in our modern society and a cornerstone of digital transformation. A large number of companies is represented within this high-tech sector with a dynamic portfolio of products and services. A common feature of these companies is their high level of innovation; around a third of the sector's turnover is generated by new products and systems. Every third innovation in the manufacturing sector in Germany is based on solutions from the electrical and digital industry. Growth in the sector is being fuelled by a number of sustainable trends. These include miniaturisation, networking, modularisation and flexibilisation in the production environment as well as electrification in the automotive industry. Representatives of the industry are often at the interface of digital transformation and their developments have an impact on a large number of sectors.
In Germany, the sector is predominantly characterised by medium-sized companies. The manufacturing companies benefit from the broad industrial base in Germany and their geographical proximity to OEMs. Increasing consolidation in a number of sub-sectors by globally positioned companies can be observed. German companies are often attractive takeover targets, with M&A activities aimed at giving acquirers access to technologies for the automation, digitalisation and networking of their own products and services, among other things. In addition to access to innovations, the main motives are to broaden customer and market coverage and gain geographical reach. For competitiveness in an environment characterised by crises and uncertainty, resilience in the supply chain is also becoming a success factor, meaning that takeovers and consolidation movements along value chains are becoming increasingly important.
