Healthcare, Pharma & Chemicals
The healthcare industry comprises many segments and ranges from inpatient clinics and facilities (acute care, rehabilitation, nursing care), outpatient care (including practice chains, medical care centres, intensive care), research, production and sales in the pharmaceutical, medical technology and biotechnology sectors, contract manufacturing and services (such as diagnostics or consulting) to trading in these products.
All segments of the healthcare industry are characterised by dynamic growth, primarily due to the ageing population and medical advances. The healthcare sector has been at the forefront of M&A transactions in Germany and Europe for years. Innovative companies are regularly founded in the healthcare sector, which is reflected in the very high number of patents, among other things. The majority of these companies is absorbed into larger market players with the help of M&A.
Looking at the chemical industry in Germany, it is characterised by cost pressure in Germany as a high-wage location. The production of basic chemicals has been relocated to Asia for decades. Nevertheless, the medium-sized chemical industry is holding its own in Germany, be it in the areas of plastic additives, paints and coatings or contract manufacturing. Market consolidation in the sector is being fuelled in particular by rising energy and personnel costs and thus falling margins.
