Food & Beverages

The food industry is a collective term for manufacturers of food, animal feed and beverages. With sales of over 200 billion euros, the industry is one of the largest industrial sectors in Germany after the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, the chemical and pharmaceutical industry and the electrical industry.

The most important segments of the food industry are the meat, milk processing, baking and pasta production and the confectionery sectors. These sectors account for around 55 per cent of the industry's total turnover. One of the most important challenges facing the industry is the increasing differentiation of consumer behaviour. New food trends are creating new niches and eroding traditional segments.

M&A plays a major role in the food industry. On the one hand, the food industry is in a permanent consolidation mode due to constantly increasing price and margin pressure. On the other hand, M&A activity is driven by the strategy of many market players to adapt their traditional business areas to changing consumer requirements, tap into new markets or even acquire new competences.
